Top Animators Talk With Villa Students
The Animation program at Villa Maria College is one of the most popular among students looking to learn the craft and break into an industry dominated by animation giants like Pixar and Dreamworks. With the rapid changes in technology and advancements in animation techniques, this is a field that will continue to offer a wealth of employment opportunities. In addition to an intensive, hands-on curriculum in animation, Villa Maria College regularly invites experienced animation professionals to speak to students during campus hour giving them the opportunity to broaden their knowledge.
On Thursday, September 29, Shaun Foster, Professor of Animation at RIT spoke to students about his production of Raccoon and Crawfish which was a selection of the prestigious and internationally renowned Cannes Film Festival.
Dylan Gottlieb (Sequence Lighter/Look Development TD, Sony Pictures Imageworks),chatted with students via Skype on Thursday, October 6. Gottlieb discussed his work on some of his most popular films that have played to audiences worldwide. These include Men in Black III, The Smurfs, Geforce, Valkyrie, Speed Racer and Beowulf.
Tom Gasek, a Professor of Animation at RIT visited with students on Thursday, October 13. Gasek has worked on such popular and successful animation pictures as Coraline, Wallace and Gromit: The Wrong Trousers; as well as the Penny Claymations from Pee Wee's Playhouse, and many more.
Bud Kolich is the Director of R&D Technical Services at Fisher-Price, Inc. Kolich visited with students on Tuesday, November 8 and will be working with Villa’s computer visualization students for one month to assist them in creating a toy design visualization for a line of Fisher-Price toys.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the need for qualified employees in the animation field will increase as the demand for realistic games, movie, and television special effects and 3-D animated movies continues to grow. They predict that employment of animators is expected to grow faster than all occupations through 2016.
Whether students want to start their career locally or work in a large metropolitan city, the real-world skills and hands-on experience students gain while earning their B.F.A. degree at Villa Maria College will prepare them for a successful career. Here, students are taught how to work with traditional media such as pencil and paper and with highly-technical computer animation software available in our advanced Stop Motion Studio and other dedicated, hi-tech spaces.
